Food Network Kitchen eatery opens at Fla. airport

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. --?The Food Network is getting into the restaurant business in a location not always associated with good food: An airport.

The channel has opened its first Food Network Kitchen at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in South Florida in the JetBlue terminal.

"The dynamic of food and travel has changed," said Sergei Kuharsky, general manager of Food Network's new business enterprises. "You used to never go in and think about eating at an airport."

Now, with passengers arriving early to get through security and limited options for in-flight food, there's a market for airport dining. "We are responding to that opportunity," Kuharsky said.

The Food Network Kitchen is the only eatery serving hot food at the JetBlue concourse. But it's the brand that gets attention from travelers as much as the lack of alternatives.

"I walked by and I said 'Oh wow, look at that. Food Network restaurant.' So I came in," said Richard Wierzbicki of Austin, Texas. "And I would look for it again because I thought the sandwich was really good."

Since opening Nov. 8, the Food Network Kitchen has averaged 1,500 customers a day.

"Airport locations are very busy, but this one especially," said Jean-Pierre Turgot, general manager for Delaware North Companies Travel Hospitality Services, which partnered with the Food Network to provide chef-inspired meals at the airport and is also a partner in Food Network-branded food sold at concession stands and stadiums. "It's the highest revenue producer at the airport."

There are no waiters, so customers sit at tables after ordering at the counter or they can get takeout food, either made to order or readymade items like sandwiches and salads.

While the recipes are developed and branded by the Food Network, the offerings are not named for Food Network personalities, shows or chefs. Instead, the menu promises organic and sustainable ingredients and offers dishes with connections to local ingredients and regional culture, such as a Florida shrimp po'boy ($13) and a salmon burger with Key lime mayo ($14).

South Florida's Latin culture is reflected in items such as the Cuban breakfast burrito ($8) and a black beans and rice burger with "mojo mayo" ($12). Also on the menu: fried pickles with Key lime mayo ($6); sweet potato fries with Key lime tartar sauce ($5); and a Cuban sandwich ($12) with cafe con leche mayo pressed on a ciabatta roll.

Wait times can back up when flights arrive and the airport gets busy, so it's best to arrive early if you plan to sit down, as Liz Lamoureux did before flying back home to San Antonio, Texas.

"On our way here, I was saying we wanted to get here early to sit down for a drink," she said as she nibbled on edamame and sipped on the house pinot grigio.

Beverages range from espresso to entwine, the Food Network's wine brand, to locally-inspired cocktails like Lansky's Run, named for the Prohibition-era gangster Meyer Lansky.

The design of the restaurant resembles the cable network's test kitchen: a butcher block bar counter, subway tiling, stainless steel surfaces and pots and pans hanging in a row ? only here, they hang behind a cash register.

The network's logo is plastered on everything from to-go boxes to brown paper bags filled with jelly beans and chocolate-covered pretzels. Most of the TVs are tuned to the Food Network, though some show sports or news. There are also some fun facts on display: A poster near the cash register details local ingredients used in the meals, while paper placemats explain how to filet a fish and describe different cuts of beef.

"We really wanted to bring our culinary expertise to the forefront and bring the brand to life," Food Network's Kuharsky said. "I think people are going to be drawn to the brand, but it also comes down to taste."

But while the network has already put its name on consumer products like frying pans and candles, along with its concession stand and stadium food, serving quality food at an airport restaurant presents different challenges.

"Branding on the front lines has the most exposure and is different than putting your name on a logo," said Chris Tripoli, president of A'la Carte Foodservice Consulting Group, who has worked on food concepts in airports across the country. "Now that you have exposed yourself to the end user, your reputation, that Food Network brand, is going to be judged on the temperature of the green beans that day or by every bite of the sandwich."

Tripoli added that Food Network staffers on the restaurant's front lines "know their brand is only going to be as good as their last meal."

The Food Network and Delaware North Companies plan to open more outlets in the spring at the busy JetBlue terminal. Another Food Network Kitchen is scheduled to open at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport by the end of 2013.?

Decree by Egypt's Mursi raises rights concerns: U.N.

GENEVA (Reuters) - Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi's decree granting himself extended powers raises very serious human rights concerns, U.N. Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay's spokesman said on Friday.

Mursi's announcement was welcomed by his allies but prompted fears among secular-minded Egyptians that the ruling Muslim Brotherhood aimed to dominate the new Egypt.

Among its other provisions, the decree states that all decisions taken by Mursi until the election of a new parliament are exempt from legal challenge. It also orders a retrial of former President Hosni Mubarak and his aides.

"We are very concerned about the possible huge ramifications of this declaration on human rights and the rule of law in Egypt," Pillay's spokesman Rupert Colville told a news briefing at the United Nations in Geneva.

"We also fear this could lead to a very volatile situation over the next few days, starting today in fact."

Colville did not specify which parts were most worrying but said the decree had many aspects to it so it would take time to analyze fully.

He said Pillay's office may put out a full statement later on Friday or on Saturday.

Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox are ?closing in on? a two-year deal with free agent outfielder Jonny Gomes, which might signal the end of their attempt to re-sign Cody Ross.

Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com wrote this morning that the Red Sox had narrowed their outfielder pursuit down to Ross and Gomes, and nearing an agreement with Gomes suggests Ross is drawing significant interest elsewhere and Boston perhaps decided he wasn?t worth paying a premium to retain.

Both players offer good right-handed power, but Ross is superior defensively and less of a liability versus right-handed pitching. Gomes played last season on a one-year, $1 million deal with the A?s and hit .262 with 18 homers and an .868 OPS in 99 games.

Miami self-imposes 2nd straight bowl ban

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) ? Miami officials said Monday that the university is making what it called an "unprecedented decision" to self-impose a postseason ban for the second straight year, ending any chance of the Hurricanes playing in either the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game or a bowl.

Just like last year, Miami's decision was made with regard to the status of the ongoing NCAA investigation into the school's compliance practices. The inquiry began in 2011 after a former booster went public with allegations that he provided dozens of athletes and recruits with extra benefits such as cash and gifts.

By sitting out again, Miami ? which still has not been presented with its notice of allegations from the NCAA ? is hoping to lessen the hit of any looming sanctions that could be handed down when the investigation ends. Schools often self-impose penalties with hope that the NCAA takes those measures into account when doling out punishment.

"Do I think it's fair? No," Miami coach Al Golden said, asked about punishing players who have not been accused of wrongdoing. "But that's the system."

Miami clearly hopes that a pair of postseason bans, especially when the Hurricanes still had a chance at a Bowl Championship Series berth this year, helps its cause with the NCAA. Whenever the process ends, sanctions against the football and men's basketball programs are expected, with penalties likely to include probation terms and scholarship reductions.

Golden said he plans on adding about 15 recruits next year, and has already started to factor anticipated scholarship-reductions into his count.

"I'm not allowed to comment on anything relative to the investigation," Golden said. "But I'm already factoring it in to my count. They're going to tell us, ultimately, but I've already started down that road of not taking a full group."

Interim athletic director Blake James informed the team of the decision Monday morning. University President Donna Shalala and the school's legal counsel were also involved in the decision.

"Considerable deliberation and discussion based on the status of the NCAA inquiry went into the decision-making process and, while acknowledging the impact that the decision will have on current student-athletes, coaches, alumni and fans, a determination was made that voluntarily withholding the football team from a second postseason was not only a prudent step for the University to take but will also allow for the football program and University to move forward in the most expedited manner possible," said the university's statement.

It continued, "The University and President Shalala have been clear from the start of the inquiry that Miami will cooperate fully and will seek the truth, no matter where the path might lead and that the institution will be stronger because of it. The University has already taken proactive measures to ensure more strict compliance with NCAA rules and continues to evaluate further steps."

James said the team was disappointed, as he would have expected.

"We feel it's a decision that's best for us moving forward," James said.

It's the first time since the 1981 and 1982 seasons that Miami will go consecutive years without a bowl trip. In 1983, the Hurricanes won the school's first of five national championships.

Schools that do not self-impose things like bowl bans when facing NCAA investigations often regret that decision. Most recently, Ohio State ? still unbeaten ? chose not to ban itself from a bowl last season, before the NCAA handed down punishments for the memorabilia-for-tattoos scandal. Instead of being in the mix for a BCS berth, and possibly a shot at the national title, the Buckeyes' season will end this weekend.

Miami's move, which was not unexpected, denies Miami the chance of playing in its first ACC title game ? the Hurricanes almost certainly would have gotten there if they beat Duke ? and also ends any chance that the team finishes its season playing what would amount to a home game at Sun Life Stadium, the site of the Orange Bowl.

The ACC champion goes to the Orange Bowl, and Miami's decision effectively ends the Coastal race. Georgia Tech will play Atlantic Division winner Florida State in Charlotte, N.C., on Dec. 1 for the conference title and automatic BCS spot.

Miami, however, still has a championship game of sorts waiting. If the Hurricanes beat Duke, they will finish tied for first in the Coastal. And for a program that's has been starting over in many respects, that alone would provide a boost heading into 2013.

"We're here as a family," quarterback Stephen Morris said. "We've faced a lot of adversity here at this university. Something that was done a couple years ago affects us right now, but that's what men have got to do. We've got to step up and stay focused on the task at hand and stay together."

The rogue booster who sparked the investigation, convicted and jailed Ponzi scheme architect Nevin Shapiro, pleaded guilty to charges that he orchestrated a $930 million scam in September 2010 ? three months before Golden arrived in Coral Gables.

Still, Golden reaffirmed his commitment to Miami on Monday, saying he's "not in the business of searching for another job right now."

"I can see the end. I can see what we're going to become," Golden said.

Miami's decision will add to the ACC's bowl dilemma this season.

The ACC has affiliations with eight bowl games, but this year, it will be unable to fill those spots. North Carolina is ineligible because of NCAA sanctions, Miami is choosing to be ineligible, and Maryland, Boston College and Virginia have already lost too many games to be bowl-qualified ? so at most, seven teams will be going to the postseason. Wake Forest (5-6) and Virginia Tech (5-6) could merit bowl invitations if they win this coming weekend.

The ACC pools its bowl revenue and shares it among all 12 of its member schools, but it's unclear how that process will be affected ? if at all ? since the league will not receive payouts from the usual number of postseason matchups. James said he believes Miami will remain part of the bowl-distribution process.

Golden said his message to the team was simple: Stay the course.

"I'm here to lead them," Golden said.

Huge N. Korea hotel begun in 1980s might soon open

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? The 105-story, pyramid-shaped hotel that has stood over North Korea's capital city like a mountain for more than 20 years just might be on the verge of opening for the first time.

Pyongyang's Ryugyong Hotel will "partially, probably" open in the middle of next year, Reto Wittwer, CEO of international hotel operator Kempinski AG, said Thursday at a forum in Seoul.

Kempinski will manage the hotel, which Wittwer said will open with shops, offices, ballrooms, restaurants and 150 rooms.

The enormous hotel has been a source of fascination and ridicule for the outside world, and an oversized embarrassment for North Korea's authoritarian regime.

North Korea began building the Ryugyong in the 1980s but stopped when funding ran out in the 1990s. Exterior construction resumed in 2009.

There have been various reports in recent years that the hotel was preparing to finally open. In September, a Beijing-based tour agency was allowed to peek inside and released pictures of the bare concrete lobby.

Wittwer said he first saw a picture of the hotel many years ago, and thought then that it could eventually make a lot of money.

He said Cairo-based Orascom Telecom is funding the construction. The firm launched a mobile network in North Korea in 2008.

4 NJ towns submerged after surge breaks levee

A levee broke in northern New Jersey on Tuesday, flooding at least four towns with up to 6 feet of water in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the National Weather Service said.

In a statement, the NWS said "portions" of Moonachie, Little Ferry, South Hackensack and Hackensack were submerged, with worse to come during Tuesday morning?s high tide, expected at about 10am ET.

"We are in rescue mode," said Jeanne Baratta, chief of the Bergen County Executive. There were no reports of fatalities as of yet, she told Reuters.

Baratta said the towns, along with parts of Carlstadt, had been "devastated" by the flood of water. The break came after Sandy, which dropped below hurricane status just before it hit the U.S. East Coast on Monday, flooded parts of the U.S. mid-Atlantic coast including New York City.

She told New Jersey newspaper, The Record, that the entire borough of Moonachie was underwater, and that it had lost its fire and police departments.

Baratta said as many as 1,000 residents may need to leave their homes and that people in a trailer park have had to climb on the roofs of their trailers to await rescue, NBCNewYork.com reported.

The National Guard, the State Police and local agencies are helping in the evacuation, The Record reported.
